Clinical Depression seems to be an increasingly common complaint amongst the western world. One that causes distress to those who are close to the person suffering with the complaint. Doctors now know there are various forms, each with its own individual characteristics. People suffer for different reasons but basically it is a result of having some unresolved issuesin their lives; almost every person will suffer from it (usually to a lesser degree) from time to time during their lives. The first thing is to recognize there is problem and approach a professional for some help; professionals can help with the situation but also discover the root cause of the condition.

It is difficult going through life and not experiencing sadness or feeling low but these things normally pass in time; it is unlikely however, a doctor would diagnose depression if they did feel this way as it is generally a temporary experience. Many people have problems caused by personal issues in relationships or family situations; if you’re having difficulties in dealing with an issue and you are ’stressed out’, you will need to find a way out of it. Problems have a tendency to multiply when they are not corrected and this is very true with this particular condition; dealing with the issues as early as possible will save someone from making themselves ill, physically and mentally.

Probably the second most common cause is a person’s place of work and could be the result of confrontation, stressful work, intimidation or even harassment; in all probability this will lead to a situation where the person who is depressed may even have a panic attack. Often, the person who is having work problems will end up unhappy and even have periods of sick leave as they become less able to perform their work duties; it may be necessary to work through the issues with a professional to get back on track again. Strangely, not all depression is self induced because it can be the result of medical treatment for an unrelated condition; this can produce symptoms that mimic exactly those of someone who is depressed.

If signs like this become apparent, the medication needs to be stopped as soon as possible and the doctor who prescribed the medication consulted. A worse situation happens where despite the best efforts of everyone involved, the reason for the person’s depression cannot be found; this type of situation makes resolving the issues all the more difficult. The problem can arise when the person cannot see that a certain situation or event for instance, as the cause; getting help is the first step in solving the problem.

A difficult form to recognize and therefore diagnose is Bipolar Disorder or manic Depression as it is commonly known; this particular condition can often leave the patient in a position of limbo for anything up to five years. When a person is unable to deal with their own issues, this condition will usually follow and at that point, provided they can admit they have a problem, something can normally be done. There is no point letting this condition run your life unless you enjoy the distress it causes you and those around you; starting medical treatment as early as possible will enable you to make those first steps to being free of its grip.
