For those who find it hard to swallow the increasingly high costs of gasoline there is hope yet in the form of creating ethanol on your own. If you have attempted to brew homemade beer or wine, it should be easy for you to start making ethanol because you can ferment any food containing starch and sugar or a waste product into a mixture that can be converted to alcohol that is 190 proof.

You could use this ethanol in your car and there may not be any need to make changes to the vehicle since it may already be ready for using E85 ethanol.

Use Dry Corn in Sufficient Quantities.

To begin making ethanol one would need dry corn which is readily available and some may even use sugar cane for this purpose. Ensure that you purchase the right amount.

The corn will have to be broken down into tiny pieces using a grain mill, then boiled in water at a high enough temperature to turn it into a liquid and finally you add enzymes to change the corn starch into sugar. Mashing as well as fermenting is also required for making ethanol.

One should ensure, when making ethanol that all the water content is removed through a process called a molecular sieve which is really a strainer and it should be as fine as possible to get a finer end product.

A product called Zeolite can also be used, this is a granulated product that works by soaking up the water leaving the longer ethanol molecules alone. To remove water from the Zeolyte product you must boil it on a backyard grill or dry it out in the sun. You can also use a hydrometer to make sure the ethanol is 200 proof, and any remaining water will go to the bottom when it is mixed with gasoline.

Two to five percent of alcohol is a Federal regulation in making ethanol, however the alcohol needs to be denatured before adding gasoline in order to obtain E85. Prior to using E85 in your car, it is necessary to ensure the car is ethanol compliant.

Following these simple steps should ensure that you have the ability to begin making your own ethanol, and thus become fuel independent.
