A college diploma is basically an official piece of paper that states that the student or recipient has gone through all the necessary requirements for his or her tertiary level of education. A diploma for the collegiate level is usually given for an undergraduate course that lasts for four to five years.

A college diploma commonly includes the name of the college or the university. The name of the recipient as well as the degree completed is also printed on the diploma. Academic achievements such as Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Summa Cum Laude are also included in the diploma for students who have completed a certain course or degree with honors.

A college diploma also stands as an academic award. Additionally, college diploma generally varies from country to country. In countries like Canada, diplomas are given by colleges while a university awards a bachelor’s degree. In other countries such as Australia, a diploma refers to a lower rank than that of a bachelor degree. In United Kingdom, having a certificate of higher education would mean that the student has successfully completed 120 CATS Point which is also equivalent to one year of university education. A Diploma of Higher Education would mean a 240 credit point.

Apart from being an official document, a college diploma has become a symbol of discipline and success. A college diploma is usually the ultimate goal of any student as this piece of paper represents all the years of their hardships as a student and at the same time it becomes their passport towards the real workaday world. Parents also consider their children’s college diploma as a valuable possession as it symbolizes that all their hard work has finally paid off.

A number of employers, especially from top companies, require an applicant to possess a college diploma. Careers in the corporate world require the employee to at least have a college degree.
