A Few Things To Consider When Choosing A Truck Driving Career
Some kids see those big rigs driving down the street and think that they want to drive one for a career someday. But not everyone is physically able to drive a truck, so if that is your career plan before you sign up with a training program at a college or truck driving school first make sure you can pass the DOT physical.
If you do not think you can pass the DOT physical then either do not pursue this career path (i.e., wasting your money on truck driver training) or learn more about the DOT exam to find out if you think you can pass.
Finding a truck driving school program for you needs will take some homework on your part. You will need to learn what each program offers such as how long it is and how much it will cost.
During your truck driver training you should get some behind the wheel time. A better school may give you more time whereas a lesser school may not. After you have completed the school training portion you will likely work for a trucking company who assigns an experienced driver to work with you for awhile.
You do not want to rely only on what an experienced driver may teach you on the job. Going to a good school that gives you enough time driving and learning real world skills is also important so make sure to find out if the school you will attend does this.
In addition to learning how to drive a truck you may also learn vehicle inspection, hook and trailer drops and other information. It is important to get a good education at a school and good practice time as well.
One if not the biggest factor in how good of an education you receive will depend on the quality of instructors. Of course the school will have their rules, but good instructors can make all the difference from OK training to really good training.
The most important thing is safety for you and the people around you. So try to avoid schools that do not focus on safety.
